Exploring ‘The Prettiest of Skies’ with Stefan Marx

Airplanes have come to symbolize many things over time – freedom, exploration & travel among them.
Inspired by these concepts, the newest solebox capsule collection ‘The Prettiest of Skies’ not only marks the second collaboration with Lufthansa but was also brought to life with designs by German artist and air travel enthusiast Stefan Marx.
While the reasons are aplenty, Marx’s fascination with air travel began during a long layover in Vienna on his way back from Japan in 2007, sparking an avid interest in “global airline networks, airports, airlines and airplanes themselves.” It’s still clearly visible today, as these elements regularly feature in the artist’s sketches and drawings, making him the perfect designer for the second solebox x Lufthansa collab that he titled ‘The Prettiest of Skies’.
As Marx explains, the name refers to the moment “when you see the sunrise in the distance during a night flight, or the many wonderful skies and cloud formations in different lighting moods, always the prettiest.”
Having the chance to collaborate with Lufthansa was a no-brainer too, as he says: “Lufthansa has been my favorite airline for many years. I associate many wonderful travel experiences with this company. When solebox asked me if I wanted to collaborate on this project, I jumped at the chance.”
The result is a diverse collection of garments and accessories featuring designs in Marx’s unmistakable style, with drawings of airplanes, airport towers and typography.
Aside from apparel pieces like t-shirts, a cap, a hoodie and a workwear jacket, his art also adorns blankets inspired by those handed out on long-distance flights and even an espresso cup based on the iconic ‘Flugzeugtasse’ by Berlin porcelain manufactory KPM.
It evokes a sense of wanderlust, a desire to explore new places and to always make sure to enjoy the way there. But what makes a good journey in the eyes of Stefan Marx? “Escaping the everyday routine, new experiences, nice airports, new people, staying healthy on the journey and coming back home with lots of drawings in the bag.” Currently, that bag should contain several sketches penned in Italy, where Marx went twice this year. His next long-distance destination? The airport HND – Tokyo Haneda.
